Safety in Small Numbers

In the past century we’ve emptied out our rural communities, particularly in the Farm Belt, and turned big cities into sprawling urban areas. It’s possible that the events of Sept. 11 could be a catalyst in the other direction — and technology will make a crucial difference.

I’m not singing an athem to suburbia, as one person wrote to me this morning. Suburbs strike me as the worst of America, not the best.
