Microsoft and the Law

I’m tuning into CSPAN’s coverage of a U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee’shearing on Microsoft and the antitrust settlement. One senator quoted a survey showing that 70 percent of Americans want the case settled. Sen. Patrick Leahy of Vermont, the committee chairman, responded, “They favor a good settlement,” not the bogus sellout they got.

Actually, I’m not so sure. Microsoft still has lots of support among average folks who aren’t personally familiar with the way the company operates. The closer you get to Microsoft and its practices, the more you understand why the antitrust case was vital and why real remedies are needed.

More in my Wednesday column.

UPDATE:

Well, they just broke up the hearing. The full Senate was called to the floor to discuss an amendment on some other topic.

How would you like to be Mitchell Kertzman, CEO of Liberate, who flew to Washington to speak to the committee and is among the several witnesses who won’t get that chance?
