How Power Corrupts

When Tony Blair ran for prime minister, he pretended to be coming from the left in many areas, including human rights. As soon as he got into power he and his ministers started proposing ever-more Draconian laws to curb the rights and liberties of the people.

In the latest example, his government has proposed an electronic surveillance law (Financial Times article) that would have done the KGB proud in the most evil days of the Soviet empire.
