Microsoft Promises Regarding Smart Tags

The latest from Microsoft on how Smart Tags will work when Windows XP is released (doesn’t seem to be changed much from last week):

  • They will be turned off by default.
  • A user’s decision to turn on Smart Tags will not be able to override a Web site’s decision to put in a do-not-show-Smart-Tags meta-tag.
  • Microsoft’s tag content will not ship with the operating system. Users will have to download the DLLs and other content.
  • There will be third-party Smart Tags available on the same site where Microsoft offers its tags.

That raised several further questions, which I asked:

  • How will third parties be able to get their tags onto the Microsoft site?
  • How will Microsoft choose which third-party tags will be on its site?
  • Will Microsoft favor its own content?

I’m sure the answer is Yes to the last question. I’ll let you know how the company responds to the others.
