The latest from Microsoft on how Smart Tags will work when Windows XP is released (doesn’t seem to be changed much from last week):
They will be turned off by default.
A user’s decision to turn on Smart Tags will not be able to override a Web site’s decision to put in a do-not-show-Smart-Tags meta-tag.
Microsoft’s tag content will not ship with the operating system. Users will have to download the DLLs and other content.
There will be third-party Smart Tags available on the same site where Microsoft offers its tags.
That raised several further questions, which I asked:
How will third parties be able to get their tags onto the Microsoft site?
How will Microsoft choose which third-party tags will be on its site?
Will Microsoft favor its own content?
I’m sure the answer is Yes to the last question. I’ll let you know how the company responds to the others.
