India Still Strong in IT, Tech Mogul Says

Technology companies across America and around the world are still feeling the hangover from the bursting of the financial bubble. But C.K. Birla, chairman of Birlasoft, says his company is doing just fine, thanks.

The Indian enterprise software and services firm, a unit of the New Delhi-based CK Birla Group, is winning business from companies that see the virtues of outsourcing, Birla said on a recent visit to Silicon Valley.

He professed confidence in the future despite the global technology slowdown. Corporate information-technology budgets have come down in the past year, he said, which only enhances the value of going offshore for some services. “You get the same thing done at lower rates,” he said.

Silicon Valley’s unique position in the tech world isn’t threatened, Birla said. But he predicted that India will surge as a technology leader in coming years. The government is investing heavily in computing and networking, both in educational programs and in the infrastructure. The result is that India’s talent pool is growing along with its ability to get jobs done.
