Steve Jobs’ Amoral Compass

I almost went by it. But buried deep in this article (Fortune magazine) about Apple Computer and Steve Jobs is the following:

And the guy who got his start in electronics as a “phone phreak” making “blue boxes” that enabled people to steal long-distance phone calls still has a little rebel in him: He has yet to install license plates on his two-year-old silver Mercedes, apparently as a way to dodge parking tickets. “It’s a little game I play,” he explains.

Rarely have I seen something that so perfectly illustrates the character of a person and, I’m sorry to say, his environment. Here in Silicon Valley, this is an almost perfect description of what’s wrong.

The technology industry continues to steer by an amoral compass. At the top, in companies like Microsoft, Apple, Oracle and others, the prevailing code is simple:

What’s acceptable is what you can get away with.

What a sick place this can be.
