Salon: The first Ted Olson scandal. It didn’t begin with the Clinton-smearing Arkansas Project. The solicitor general nominee’s pattern of ruthlessness and deception began during his tenure in the Reagan administration.
I was in Washington the day the Monica Lewinsky story broke in the Washington Post. A friend invited me to join a dinner party at a downtown restaurant. Among the people at the table were Theodore Olson and his wife, Barbara.
The Olsons were, to put it mildly, gleeful at the predicament Bill Clinton was facing. Their tone suggested, “We’ve got that SOB now.” Their delight was sickening — and revealing, in retrospect, when it emerged how closely they’d worked with the anti-Clinton zealots to wreck that presidency.
The more we learn about Ted Olson, the more dismayed we should be. This is the man who’s going to be solicitor general?
Does Congress have any integrity left? We’ll find out with this nomination.
