Michael Powell Takes on Baby Bells?

AP: FCC chief wants greater authority to sanction phone companies. At a hearing earlier this year, Powell laid out this philosophy to lawmakers: “I might give you a better benefit of the doubt, but when you cheat, I’m going to hurt and hurt you hard.”

This would have a more persuasive ring if Powell weren’t a member of a party whose leaders are working hard to curb FCC oversight (AP) over the regional phone monopolies. If Powell successfully lobbies these FCC-emasculation efforts, I’ll tend to believe him more.

The threats to the FCC’s authority are a clear and present danger. Congress, under the thumb of the phone monopolies, needs to hear from citizens who care about preserving competition. Even if Powell means what he says, he needs your help.
