Will ICANN Bend Over Again?

Bloomberg News: ICANN to vote today on control over dot-com database. The board that oversees the Internet’s address system is scheduled to vote today on a proposal that would let Mountain View-based VeriSign keep control of the database of all dot-com names and keep selling lucrative .com names through 2007.

If ICANN truly represented the overall Internet community, this outrageous deal would not have even been considered. “Scandal” feels like an appropriate word here.

Maybe Congress’ reviving interest in this matter will have some effect. But I wouldn’t bet on it, given ICANN’s history of bending over for its most powerful and ruthless constituents.
