Where the Net is Heading

Above is a peaceful room in a Kyoto temple, a long, long way from the frenzy of today’s Internet. Next to it is the famous Golden Pavilion, also in Kyoto at another temple.

The Internet Society’s meeting ended on Friday. I was struck by the diversity of the crowd — a thousand people from a hundred countries where the Net’s presence ranges from pervasive to almost nonexistent.

What I heard from all kinds of people was optimism. More in my Sunday column.
